While similar looking breeds may be seen in earlier artwork, it is believed that the Whippet breed as we know it was developed during the late 1800's in England. They were originally bred to catch rabbits for their owner's dinner and race for sport on their days off. They were known as the "poor man's race horse". The upper classes bred the dog to more resemble a small greyhound giving it a showier look. The Whippet was first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1888. They are a medium sized sighthound with a short coat that comes in many colors. Their wonderful temperments make them an excellent companion but they are also often seen competing in many venues such as conformation, lure coursing, racing, agility, obedience, flyball, and rally.
While we consider our dogs to be pets we do enjoy competing in conformation as well. We do breed on average a litter every year or two. Our goal is to breed healthy dogs who will make wonderful companions. Please look around the site for more information about our dogs or any upcoming litters and feel free to contact us with any questions, for further information, or puppy inquiries at debby@mohrwhippets.com.
